Description
PROJECT INTENT
Over its nearly 70-year history, St. Edmund’s Academy underwent many renovations—in disparate architectural styles—resulting in a pre-kindergarten-8th grade independent school that lacked unity. Meanwhile, modern accessibility features were never realized; the music and art rooms were cramped, and the preschool was in a basement. In the interest of sustainability, the renovations repurposed the existing structure with creative additions, namely a bright lobby that connects the different buildings by stairs and a new elevator, opening access for all. The structure that previously housed the gymnasium was reimagined to accommodate larger, brighter spaces for art, music and entrepreneurial programming. The preschool was relocated to the former art rooms resulting in more welcoming, natural light-filled environments. Collectively, these innovative modifications led to inspiring spaces for education, while the aesthetic refinements provided the school a stronger street presence—promoting community and school pride.
