PROJECT INTENT 
Bloomfield’s Central Gateway is a prominent public space that serves as the entrance into several of Pittsburgh’s East End neighborhoods. As one of the few remaining large-scale redevelopment opportunities in Bloomfield, residents want the ShurSave site to be redeveloped to complement the neighborhood and continue providing important, community-supported uses.

Working with the local community development corporation, the architects facilitated and led a robust public design and planning process around the site. Through a series of hands-on, inclusive, and fun workshops, the Bloomfield community expressed and built their visions for the future of development at the ShurSave site and urban design standards that could be applied through the neighborhood.

The resulting guidelines document summarizes an extensive community conversation about the future of development in Bloomfield, and provides important architectural and urban design Development Guidelines to help shape neighborhood projects.
